The real reason a digital mockup and package disagree
Packaging-design forums frequently show buyers comparing a finished bag or box with a luminous screen image after production. The dispute usually started earlier: the screen preview was treated as a color contract, the artwork did not say whether a brand color was spot or process, the substrate and finish changed, or no measurable acceptance target was agreed.
A mockup can communicate layout and visual direction. It cannot reproduce the optical behavior of ink, a colored board, metallic film, white ink, lamination, varnish or embossing. Color control must follow the physical production path.
Use one color specification chain

Pantone spot color and CMYK are different production decisions
Pantone describes spot color as a premixed ink applied as its own color, while process printing combines standard inks to reproduce an image. CMYK is efficient for photographs, gradients and multi-color graphics. A spot ink can be useful for a critical solid brand color, but only if the chosen press, ink and substrate can achieve the target.
Converting an RGB or HEX screen value to CMYK or Pantone is not a guarantee of visual equivalence. Pantone explains that RGB and CMYK are device-dependent spaces, and its published guidance notes that only part of the spot-color library can be closely reproduced with standard CMYK. Treat conversions as a starting point for production evaluation, not an automatic answer.
Coated, uncoated, kraft, film and finish change the result
Pantone's support guidance explains that coated and uncoated references use the same ink formulation but can look different because the paper surface changes absorption and appearance. The same principle is important beyond paper: a transparent film, metallized layer, natural kraft board, white folding carton and wrapped rigid box do not present the same optical background.
For every critical color, ask the supplier to evaluate the actual production stack:
- Material and supplier grade used for production.
- Surface color, gloss, texture and opacity.
- White ink or primer, including coverage and order of printing.
- Reverse or surface printing for flexible packaging.
- Lamination, varnish or coating applied over the ink.
- Adjacent colors, overprint, trapping and any metallic effect.
A proof ladder prevents the wrong approval
- Content proof: checks copy, barcode placement, dieline, image and artwork revision. It may not predict final color.
- Color-target review: confirms the selected physical reference or measurement data and whether the production process can approach it.
- Substrate drawdown or contract proof: evaluates a critical color or process simulation under stated conditions. Record its limitations.
- Production-intent sample or press approval: includes the intended material, ink sequence and finish when the project risk justifies it.
- Signed master: identifies the accepted version, date, substrate, process and finish for production and repeat orders.
Do not label every sample a “color proof.” State whether it approves content, approximate appearance, a measurable color target, or the finished construction. That single sentence prevents many later disputes.
How to specify Delta E without inventing a universal tolerance
Delta E expresses color difference, but the number depends on the formula and measurement conditions. Pantone's process-variance guidance discusses Delta E 2000 targets within its own production program; that is not an automatic tolerance for every packaging contract. ISO 12647-2 defines process-control parameters for offset printing and includes packaging-relevant substrates, but a buyer still has to identify the applicable condition and acceptance method.
A complete measurable agreement should state:
- Reference spectral or L*a*b* data and the physical master.
- Delta E formula, such as CIEDE2000 if selected by the parties.
- Instrument geometry, illuminant, observer and measurement mode.
- Whether the substrate or backing is included in the measurement.
- Measurement locations and how gradients, seams or small areas are handled.
- Number of samples, averaging method and batch acceptance rule.
- Agreed tolerance for the specific process, material and brand risk.

The substrate decision is different for folding and corrugated boxes, wrapped gift boxes, cosmetic cartons and printed flexible pouches. Start with the site's artwork guidelines and sample process, then add the project-specific color agreement to the RFQ.

Color feasibility and tolerance depend on artwork, material, ink, press, finish and measurement method. Approve a project-specific written standard; do not rely on a screen, a photograph or a generic Delta E number.
FAQ for packaging color approval
Can a screen PDF prove how packaging color will print?
No. A screen is useful for content and layout approval, but its appearance depends on the display and viewing conditions. Production color should be controlled with a defined color reference, substrate, print process, finish, suitable proof and agreed measurement method.
Should a brand use Pantone or CMYK for custom packaging?
CMYK is normally suited to photographs and multi-color artwork. A spot color may be appropriate for a critical brand color that the selected process and substrate can reproduce. The printer should assess gamut, process, cost and proofing before the choice is locked.
Does one Pantone number look identical on every packaging material?
No. Paper coating, film, kraft color, white ink, lamination, varnish and print process affect the result. Pantone itself distinguishes coated and uncoated references because ink appearance changes with the surface.
What Delta E tolerance should packaging use?
There is no universal number suitable for every project. The parties must agree on the color-difference formula, target data, instrument settings, substrate, measurement location, sample count and acceptance tolerance before production.
What should be approved before a packaging print run?
Approve the artwork revision, color names and separations, physical or measured target, substrate, white-ink treatment, print process, coating or lamination, proof type, viewing and measurement conditions, tolerance, defect rules and signed reference sample.

Send the packaging structure, actual material, brand-color references, artwork, quantity and finish. State which colors are critical and what proof or measurement evidence you require.
